The works include the construction of a remote 2.5m wide active travel path along the main road into Sandwick, Shetland from the North of the junction with Sea Gaet to the housing scheme called Veester Hill.

The project provides an active travel path through the thriving village of Sandwick. Adding to the existing paths and links within the village encouraging safe access for residents wishing to walk and cycle between settlements and the key facilities such as the school and shop etc.

Key details of the construction and contract include:

• Current Status: Construction is actively underway. Initial works, including the establishment of a site compound, traffic management and the initial earthworks are now in progress with a completion date in Autumn of 2026.
• Design & Alignment: The new route and remote footpath requires realignment of the existing road. These works are included in the scope for the contract and run concurrently with the construction of the remote path and associated drainage.
• Project Scope: The civil works contract awarded to CW Johnson Plant Ltd includes road realignment, remote path construction and surfacing, drainage, landscaping, and fencing. Surfacing of the wearing course for new sections of the road will be covered separately by the council’s internal roads team using existing budgets.
