£2M Contract to provide a cable link between the new SSE GSP at Gremista with the existing Lerwick Power Station and the BESS (Battery back up solution)

This will provide a connection between the new SSE electricity supply from the Scottish mainland and the existing power station and also the battery storage solution. This will ensure security of supply to Shetland in the event of disruption to the new SSE mainland link.

Key details of the construction and contract include:

• Current Status: Construction is actively underway. Floated access track, trench excavation, cable laying and reinstatement are all nearing completion. Additional works including palisade fencing, communication ducts and chambers are nearing completion, with a completion date in Autumn of 2026.
• Design & Alignment: The new cabling corridor provides a connection between the existing electricity provision at the Lerwick power station with the new GSP supplied from the sub-sea electricity cable connected to the Scottish mainland. It provides resilience in the event of damage or an outage to the new sub-sea cable. 18 number 1000mm2 cables and 2 communication ducts connect the GSP to the Power station.
• Project Scope: The civil works contract awarded to CW Johnson Plant Ltd includes temporary access tracks, cable trench excavation, cable laying, cable surround and reinstatement, landscaping, and fencing.
